BOOK CLUB READS Top 40 2016 7 FICTION FICTION In the Unlikely Event Judy Blume Set in the early 1950s, In the Unlikely Event is based on real-life events when three commercial airliners crashed in as many months with devastating consequences for the community of Elizabeth, New Jersey. The novel has a large cast of characters but the narrative is kept tight by the voice of Miri Ammerman, an attractive but gawky teenager who tells her own coming-of-age story against the backdrop of a community reeling with shock and disbelief. Miri’s uncle Henry, the local news-hound, reports on the death and destruction with a flamboyance of language that Judy Blume has borrowed from actual newspaper reports of the time. The characters in the book are flawed, keeping secrets from one another or striving for perfection in an increasingly chaotic world, but they are drawn by a master novelist – making them unforgettable.
