The Good People Hannah Kent For those who were fans of Kent’s debut novel Burial Rites, they will not be disappointed by her second novel. Set in Ireland in the early 19th Century The Good People follows the story of Nora Leahy, whose daughter and husband have passed away. Nora is left to look after her grandson, Micheal who has become a sickly child and very difficult to care for. She seeks the assistance of Father Healy who tells her that nothing can be done for the boy. Nora tries to keep the boy hidden from the superstitious locals, however soon rumours start to circulate that Micheal is a changeling and they begin to blame him for things going wrong in their valley. Nora looks to try and banish the changeling from Micheal’s body with the help of two women. Once again, Kent’s remarkable skill of transporting the reader to another time and country is brilliant and her storytelling is engaging. Definitely worth a read. What should I read next?
