22 Borrow the e-audiobook through Overdrive now! Our Souls at Night Kent Haruf Author Kent Haruf has composed a spare and delicate ode to late-in-life love in his latest book, Our Souls At Night. More poignant is that the book was Haruf’s last, penned just a few days before his death. Set in the small Colorado town of Holt, the story begins with Addie proposing an idea of platonic friendship to her neighbour, Louis. Both widowed and in their 70s, the characters form a friendship that strengthens as they reveal more of themselves and their histories to each other while snuggled up at night. This relationship initially meets with snarky disapproval of the locals and eventually with stern threats of reprisals from close family members. When Addie’s grandson Jamie comes to visit, a close bond is formed between the three. Most touching are the passages where Addie and Louis reminisce on past regressions and regrets and then in later chapters when those actions allow them a second chance of redemption in their relationship with Jamie. A gorgeous read that will leave you with a lump in your throat. What should I read next? The Love Song of Miss Queenie Hennessy by Rachel Joyce Top40BookClubReadsFICTION
