The Mandibles: A Family 2029-2047 Lionel Shriver The Mandibles follows the fortunes (or loss) of the Mandible family from 2029 to 2047, as America faces total economic ruin. The American dollar is all but worthless and the family inheritance is no longer worth the paper it’s printed on. From the patriarch and his second wife, through the children who, while not completely relying on the money but are looking forward to it nonetheless, and the grandchild who saw it all coming before anyone else, the Mandibles lives are about to change completely. Shriver is a no apologies, take no prisoners style of writer. In this novel she takes aim at America, its insular nature and its belief that it is and will always be superior. In great detail, Shriver successfully builds a world in economic collapse. The Mandibles picks up the pace as it goes, with the last quarter of the book galloping along. The ending is sure to provoke much discussion in any book group. While not a comfortable read The Mandibles is worthwhile, especially for Shriver fans. What should I read next?
