An Isolated Incident Emily Maguire This book explores the difference between extreme violence and the ‘everyday’ violence that women experience. It is set in Strathdee, a rural town somewhere between Sydney and Melbourne, which serves mainly as a truck stop. Much-loved Bella is horrifically murdered and her body is dumped just outside town. Chris, her grieving sister, local barmaid and under-the-radar sex worker – and May, an ambitious but principled city journalist – are gatekeepers of the unfolding story. This is not a traditional crime novel. Forensic detail, stereotypical suspects, police authority and even the offender are missing in action. Gratuitous violence and public outpourings of sympathy following such crimes are examined and scor ned, replaced with a palpably personal story of grief and loss. What should I read next?
