[ FICTION [ His Bloody Project Graeme Macrae Burnet Truth, honour and class are the concerns of this epistolary novel, consisting of medical reports, interviews, court proceedings and a written confession all exploring a brutal murder in 19th century Scotland. Roderick Macrae, brow-beaten by feudalism and poverty, wreaks his own justice on his family’s tormentor in a remote Highland setting which is far from idyllic. Trying to make sense of the situation, Macrae’s state-appointed advocate calls on an expert in the emerging field of criminology to explain how a formerly subservient peasant could turn to crime, seemingly without remorse. Burnet plays tricks with the reader in both the framing and telling of the story, but it all holds together as a complete, if disturbing, whole. What should I read next?
