NON-FICTION 39 What should I read next? The glass castle by Jeannette Walls Get Up Mum Justin Heazlewood Justin Heazlewood is an award-winning writer, musician and comedian. This book tells the story of his family life between the ages of 12 and 13. He has a close family, spending a lot of fun times with his grandparents and sometimes other members of his extended family. They go on camping trips, have slide nights and funny family traditions. It also tells what it was like to grow up in Burnie, Tasmania, in the 90s. It’s a story of coming of age and first crushes, told through the eyes of the young, exuberant Justin. Unfortunately, while his mother, a single parent, clearly loved him, the harsh reality was, she grappled with a mental illness that sometimes made Justin’s life, at such a young age, stressful and intense. Justin was always acutely aware and dreaded the signs that her illness was about to manifest itself. This book is about a family trying to understand one of their own, and their behaviour, frustration and confusion when offering support – all while treasuring the good moments.
