NON-FICTION 41 What should I read next? Joe Cinque’s Consolation by Helen Garner The Arsonist Chloe Hooper Victoria’s 2009 Black Saturday bushfires are seared into the Australian consciousness. With the loss of 230 lives and an estimated $4 billion in infrastructure and property, there was always going to be someone held accountable, or at least a scapegoat. Chloe Hooper doesn’t reveal her position on the accused until very late into the book, preferring to present a factual, almost procedural account of the events up to and after their arrest. Her visceral writing on the bushfires and the search for its perpetrator shocks and sometimes upsets; but the empathy and tenderness shown to the victims and the firefighters leavens the horror.
