40 41 Touching the Void tells the true mountaineering adventure story of Joe Simpson and his climbing partner, Simon Yates. Disaster struck shortly after they had reached the top of a 21,000-foot peak in the Andes. Simpson plunged off the vertical face of an ice ledge, while still attached to Yates by rope. After hours of physical and mental hardship, battling blizzards and darkness, Yates had to make the heartrending decision to cut the rope and save himself. He made it back to base camp with the awful certainty that he had caused the death of Simpson in order to save himself. However, Simpson was not dead, and battles to make it back to base camp with a broken leg, not knowing if anyone would be there waiting for him.
