16 On CAnAAn’S SIDE SeBAStIAN BARRy Lilly Bere, an 89-year-old grandmother, sits down to write the story of her life. Growing up in Ireland, she had seen her fair share of revolution and death before she fled with her husband to America. A historical reflection on a changing Ireland, the story of her childhood and family is told through the eyes of Lilly. If you have read other books by Sebastian Barry, you will be familiar with the characters of Lilly’s father and brother as the story follows the Dunnes from Annie Dunne and A Long, Long Way. Barry’s lyrical writing style makes this an enjoyable read.
