Top 40 Book Club : 2012
17 PLEASE LOOK AfTER mOThER kyuNG-Sook SHIN This book combines the familiar with exotic. The universal theme of changing relationships between aging parents and children is framed within the Korean cultural experience, often very different from a western perspective. The mother of the story becomes lost within the city and her relatives respond to the anxiety and grief through reliving seemly trivial but deeply emotional incidents in their shared lives. Deep currents of anger, regret and guilt are revealed through simply-expressed prose, when the women’s husband and children realise how much they have failed to look after Mother.
