FICTION | TOP 40 BOOK CLUB READS 26 27 clOSer TO STOne SimOn cleary Back with his second novel, Brisbane-based Cleary has woven a story that travels from the Lockyer Valley all the way to nor thern Africa as Bas, a twent y-year-old sculptor, embarks on a journey to find his missing brother. Set in 1993, Bas’s brother Jack, a peacekeeper with the UN has disappeared, believed to be a deserter. Bas is sent by his father to discover the truth and bring his brother home, but what he discovers in a country so foreign to his own and in the grips of the rise of fundamentalist Islam, was something he was not prepared for. Cleary crafts a wonderful novel full of unexpected twists. His description of the landscape of the Sahara is perfect – you will be able to taste the dust in your mouth as you navigate your way through the story.
