Top 40 Book Club : Top 40 Book Club Reads 2013
32 33 FICTION | TOP 40 BOOK CLUB READS nw Zadie SmiTh Zadie Smith is back with a new novel set in a council estate in Willesdon, Nor th London. As we track through the lives of Leah, Felix, Natalie and Nathan who all grew up in the estate, we are introduced to the effects of money and poverty, street smarts and education, the lives of those who left the estate and those who stayed. In typical Smith style, the characters are written with honesty and humility and, whilst it could be seen as a brutal depiction, the area in which it is set shares moments of beauty when least expected. NW can be a difficult read in parts and you may, as previous Zadie Smith novels, experience the frustration of situations that the characters put themselves in, however it is well worth reading and there is plenty to discuss.
