His mother, an Australian secretary working in Iceland in the 1970s was secretly involved with a married man and promised to never reveal their relationship or the son born from it. Gíslason takes us to a country that is both beautiful and isolated and, in the telling of his own story, shows us how the Icelandic culture shaped his childhood without the presence of a father. The stor y takes the reader from Iceland, to Australia, England and back again, with each set ting being stark in contrast to the others. Gíslason’s story is engaging and will provide much to discuss for book club members.
