FICTION 3 BOOK CLUB READS Top 40 THE BORROWER Rebecca Makkai Lucy Hull is a children’s librarian, unsatisfied and unfulfilled in her work and life. Ian is a smar t kid, wanting to learn about himself and the world around him. Lucy and Ian kidnap each other and head off on a road trip, which takes them on a journey into their own lives and away from the expectations of society. Sometimes unbelievable and slightly unrealistic, Lucy and Ian’s adventure of self-discover y uses literary quotes and references from well-known children’s novels. Though well written and nicely paced, Makkai’s novel is not for those looking for a true-to-life story – rather it is for those after a feel good, moral tale about things that can happen in our imaginations.
