Agnes Magnúsdóttir, a servant alongside two others, was convicted of the brutal murders of two men and sentenced to death. Burial Rites delves into the months leading up to Agnes’ execution, where she lives with a Christian family charged with looking after her. Throughout her time in their house, she gradually reveals her life story and finally, what actually happened on the night of the murders. Beautifully written, Kent’s book takes the reader on a journey through Iceland and its natural elements.
