FICTION 29 BOOK CLUB READS Top 40 THE SON Philipp Meyer Described as a great American novel, The Son follows three stories of one Texan family, the McCullough’s. Beginning with Eli, the son who was born in 1836 then kidnapped by the Comanche as a young boy. In an effort to survive, Eli learns to adapt to the Comanche culture. The novel continues with the story of Eli’s son, Peter whose life is affected by Mexican attacks on their land. Finally, we meet Jeanne Anne, the great granddaughter of Eli who, at the age of 86, is the fifth richest woman in Texas and battles to keep the family land amidst the modern day trials of a man’s world. The Son is an epic piece of literature and a fascinating read – especially Eli’s accounts of his time spent with the Comanche.
