BOOK CLUB READS Top 40 NON-FICTION 34 MONTEBELLO: A MEMOIR Robert Drewe Beautifully and honestly written, this is West Australian writer Robert Drewe’s meandering sequel to his earlier memoir, The Shark Net. He writes about his fascination with islands, in par ticular, the Montebello islands off the coast of Western Australia. Interestingly, these islands were the site of nuclear testing by the British in the 1950s and as a result no animal life survived. Drewe travels to the islands with a group of scientists who are tr ying to re-populate the area with wildlife. He inter views witnesses to the testing and hears how Australian ser vicemen in the area were not given any protective clothing, which meant that many subsequently died from cancer related to radiation. Along with the story of the islands, Drewe touches on his relationship with a shark attack victim, a notorious criminal, his often hilarious adventures in the film industr y and the breakdown of his marriage after 25 years – stories that have made up the fabric of his life.
