NON-FICTION 43 BOOK CLUB READS Top 40 THREE CROOKED KINGS Matthew Condon In 1949, Terence Murray Lewis graduated from the Queensland Police Academy. Over the following four decades he would rise to be one of the most notorious figures in the Queensland judicial system. Three Crooked Kings follows Lewis’ career, as he forms friendships and alliances with detectives Glen Hallahan and Tony Murphy, and a mentoring relationship with Commissioner Frank Bischof. Journalist and novelist Matthew Condon has written an amazingly detailed account of an era that affects Queensland society to this day. The narrative follows Lewis’ journey in parallel with prostitute and brothel madam Shirley Brifman, whose alleged suicide in the early 1970s was the catalyst for the collapse of a corrupt and cataclysmic culture. Condon’s skill as a writer is inspiring, as the sheer mass of information gained through interviews with Terry Lewis and access to his personal papers is solidified by the gripping, sad, terrifying and compelling stor y of what happened in our own backyard.
